The Buzzcocks were one of the most gifted formations of British punk rock and would have had the same influence on generations to come as the Sex Pistols. The song Boredom was also valid in itself and was one of the most epic punk anthems of the age. When Devoto left (to start magazines), Shelley took the lead and the Buzzcocks began to produce songs that were much more melodic than average.
While the lyrics were still talking about the teenage torment of the boys, the music instead revealed the influence of Kinks and Who, from What Do I Get (February 1978) to I Don't mind (1978), with an epic clash choir and Ever Fallen In Love (1978), their biggest hits and popular romance par excellence.
The albums Another Music In A Different Kitchen (UA, 1978) and Love Bites (UA, 1978) are disfigured in comparison to such an abundance of unforgettable melodies. The first eight singles were collected on Singles Going Steady (IRS, 1979). He had matured and the intellectual songs of A Different Kind Of Aension ( UA, 1979), especially You Say You Don't Love Me and I Believe, made him one of the most creative English songwriters of the time.
The album Pete Shelley composed in 1974 also saw the light of day, Sky Yen (Groovy, 1979), an experimental work of electronic music. As initiators of the Manchester scene, the Buzzcocks Beatles and Stooges merged into a poetic (instead of polemic) and pathetic (instead of epic) "punk pop". Buzzcocks were one of the most prevalent styles of punk rock and would have proven as powerful as the Sex Pistols forever.
When the Sex Pistols opened the Punkrock "Hardcore" move, the Boscocks opened the "Punk Pop" move. Buzzcock's successors, both Ramones and this group, were visionaries and therefore separated two different elements: on the one side violent, on the other side melodic. Manchester was the birthplace of the Boscocks.
