The term punk means "material of poor quality" in the Anglo-American area; it points to a young man who tends towards criminal activities, while punk is already used by William Shakespeare as a "prostitute" or even as "scum". The punk qualification associated with music first appeared in the early seventies in relation to groups of the previous decade and then defined garages band (Sonics, Count five, Standells) to show a wild, energetic and minimal approach to rock'n'roll.
The first signs of punk, however, can already be found in US formations such as Velvet Underground, MC5 and Stooges, which had been active a decade earlier, as well as in the destructive attitude of the British, who caused the existential frustration of youth among the first rock groups of the sixties. The first signs of punk can be observed in a record market in a phase of intense refluxes, while rock loses its vital and rebellious component.
After the end of the era of hippie counterculture, discotheque dance will conquer a wide audience of all ages with its harmless invitation to dance, while progressive rock from bands such as Yes, Genesis, Emerson, Lake & Palmer will reach a high level of complacency and seem to have sacrificed the path of rock for a formal quest for cultured musical expression.
Since its foundation, punk has been a movement that breaks with musical seriousness, does not tolerate the mechanisms and discipline of everyday life, and renounces conservative politics. Originally rejected by multinational record companies (but then commercialized at the first signs of success), punk pursues a strategy of self-production and self-promotion, creating a market free from the logic of the music industry.
The scene in the United States is heterogeneous, as the crowded New York avant-garde music scene between 1975 and 1977 shows. The poet and punk heir to the Greenwich Village tradition that made Bob Dylan great, Patti Smith debuted withorses in 1975, while the Ramones revived the splendour of garages with an injection of speed and rage in 1977.
More abstract and dissonant groups like Television (Marquee Moon) and Richard Hell and the Voidoids prefer more rhythmically structured songs. California punk with germ (GI, 1979), Dils and Dead Kennedys (Fresh Fruit for Rooting Veggies, 1980) reaches exaggerated speeds and becomes "political". In London, the impresario Malcom McLaren founded Sexistols ( Never Mind The Bullocks - Here's the Sexistols, 1977), as he had done with the harmless and elegant American rock group New York Dollls, and made them the most outrageous and provocative rock group of all time.
The United Kingdom is home to formations such as damned Damned damned (1977), Buzzcocks and Clash. The latter represent the politicized avant-garde of the punk movement with its attack on the capitalist economy of the Western world; they articulate their music in various ways and propose a nervous and fast punk in 1977 to contaminate the genres in the London vocation (1979).
After the initial push was over, punk went two ways in the early 80s: compromise with more accessible sounds (New Wave) and radicalization (Hardcore Punk).
