Undisciplined, sometimes bad, sometimes almost oddly sweet, it's all too easy to make mistakes with post-punk, to lose the compass in a story that begins on Shakespeare's basis, in which the wound is always open from within, by the brothers, Iago vs Othello. In the late 1970s, after representing one of the most influential ruptures of our modernity, the punk scene suddenly began to multiply, extending to fashion and art, and destroying itself into a series of underwoods that tore apart every previous rule.
Like a real cathedral, full of rites and symbols, of scars that become medals, won on battlefields full of blood, rage and sweat, its nature is the separation that is within and that cannot be weighed as if the posture on a scale as the heart of each Shylock.
The death of Sid Vicious, the release of Clash with London Making in the USA, the shadows of the Thatcher era begin to appear on the UK, causing punk to close more and more in its environment, transcend the music and then transform into a last political current and generation from which flowers blossom as well as acidity and do not tend to compromise.
Among these, the post-punk, the current that keeps its traits more and more, begins to assert itself and represents the dark side of anger, the postmodern loneliness in the higher and higher cities, but paradoxically more and more trapped in itself. A discomfort that is also described by music, more spiritual and open, existentialist, because it must also exist between terms that are incompatible.
Post-punk is an endless galaxy, but its stories will cross in one world or another.
Introduction to the musical movement of Post-Punk
It is a style of music born at the end of the 70's which blends punk rock with new elements and whole genres like disco, dub, electronic music and krautrock. Despite its roots in genres known for their tendency to appear excessive and violent, post-punk differs from its mother genre in terms of themes (more serious and reflective), style and song writing, which are more refined and focus on creating experimental atmospheres.
The genus develops simultaneously in England and the United States, with an important reference to Australia. The traditional punk at that time began to show first signs of failure. Inspired by a mostly naturalistic, simplified and essentialistic way of thinking, without ignoring cultivated themes and political veins, the bands born in this period have the main goal of incorporating new, unusual elements into their traditional musical structure.
Post-punk. Punk Dopple. What's after punk? First of all, it makes sense to mention 1978 as an approximate date to indicate the final crisis of traditional punk. The music critics of the time welcomed their concerts with enthusiasm and described them as something completely new and disturbing. Immediately after the dissolution of Sex Pistols, whose singer he was, he decided to found Public Image Ltd., forerunner of post-punk and the first fully genre group.
Their debut record "Public Image Ltd - First Issue" (1978) immediately became a cult object among new fans of the movement and presented moments of absolute innovation. Intense insights into reflection, anger, cold and cynicism combine to create a product of impeccable musical and historical value that is fundamental to the development of the movement.
The classical guitar canons of Rock N' Rock are abandoned in favour of compositions that are more susceptible to jazz and progressive rock. Sensitivity, solidity and empathy are combined in this record with a typical humorous taste, which will be an important part of the themes with which post-punk is lyrically confronted. In Albion the most important representatives of the movement are the Pop Group, Public Image Ltd and the Sits.
Rooted in avant-garde, dancing music and the subgenre of the Reggae, their post-punk is "cultivated" and at the same time systematically oriented towards political themes. How can we not address basic groups: Joy Division and The Fall (very important for the development of alternative rock in the end of the 90s) are the standard bearers of radical changes within punk, while The Gang Of Four, Essential Logic and This Heat are supported by artistic studies on the composition of political music (almost always by Sinistra).
In the second half of the 70s, the suicides looked out and organized post-punk and fruitful ground for the development of Minimal Synth and No Wave/New Wave. Very important, they integrate elements of Industrial, Musique Concrète and Fields Records into the vocabulary of the genre. One of the few groups to reach both educated audiences and majorstream audiences, The Speaking Heads showed an absolutely undeniable musical quality.
The American movement could count on Chrome, Residents and Tuxedomoon, who used humour, jazzy comedy and the expressiveness of technology and multimedia. Among others, The Contortionist, Mars, DNA, Theoretical Girls and Rhys Chatham will establish No Wave, a musical genre characterized by noise and a nihilistic worldview.
The heart of this movement is the "No New York" collection, created by Brian Eno. Music critics gave post-punk a strong impulse in the early 80s, which was regarded as an absolute novelty and interpreter of the values of the time. Consequently, the record companies are well equipped to promote the dissemination and development of groups that want to support the musical work in the popular environment.
Parallel to the emergence of new realities such as Essential Logic, Magazines, Alternative TV, which essentially refer by name to the strengthening and maturation of the basic ideas of post-punk, veiled by extremism, fertile complexes with the people, such as ABC, Associates, Gary Numan, Soft Cell, Human League, are also targeted, which will serve as main levers for the refinement of synthpop, the most immediate musical genre, but extremely related to post-punk.
The original core of post-punk collapsed when most groups turned to a more glamorous aesthetic and aimed to conquer the masses. There is a genre change in Gang Of Four (which will definitely be transformed into New Wave), the birth of U2 and the revival of the genre Industrial and Noise (Sonic Youth, Swans, Glenn Branca).
The beating heart of these compositions is a solid rhythm section, which is mostly monotonous, predominant and mechanical. In the late 90s and early 2000s, some indie rock bands began to include musical and aesthetic elements of post-punk in their repertoire. The Strokes are considered the watershed between the original Post-Punk and the Post-Punk Revival.
It differs from the mother current in production, which is clearly modern and clean, unlike the Lo-Fi current of the original movement. The post-punk review has a great commercial attraction when you think of groups like Interpol, Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party and The Killers. Once the 2005 review had reached a successful climax, it flattened out and merged with mainstream rock music.
The eclecticism of post-punk has promoted the formation of various sub-genres: post-punk is very pronounced in Eastern Europe and the Balkans and is essentially perceived as an instrument of ventilation and anger for the precarious socio-political situation in which the area lived and still lives at that time.
