Newborn Eddie Harris e Phineas, due to dismemberment.
Sometimes "Birdland", the evening jazzman of Rete Due, deals with musicians who had a great resonance in the course of their career, but today seem forgotten. This week Maurizio Franco presents the two personalities Phineas Newborn (1931-1989) and Eddie Harris (1934-1996), who are almost contemporary, but stylistically very different.
Growing up in a family of musicians, he made his debut in his father's "Rhythm & Blues" bands, which accompanied B.B. King in his first career steps. He established himself as an executive in the early 50s and continued an important career until the mid 60s. Some critics today consider him one of the greatest pianists of modern jazz.
Saxophonist Eddie Harris, 3 years younger than Newborn, made his debut in his native Chicago with Gene Ammons, joined the US Army Band in Europe and began his career shortly afterwards, in the early 1960s, when he released his debut on the Vee-Jay label. "The first golden record with the single of the same name in the top 100 of the popular charts and at the top of this R & B was "Exodus to Jazz".
Later Harris developed a music that belonged to the archetypes of classical music, with electric instruments (he also played the Fender Rhodes) and the use of a special electronically amplified saxophone. His albums between the mid 60s and early 70s, including the historic "Swiss Movement", are very impressive.
Recorded in Montreux in 1969 together with pianist and organist Les McCann, this album is still one of the best-selling in the history of Jazz.
