Punkrock in the United States of America

American punk has its roots in 1960s garages and the raw minimalism of Velvet Underground and The Modern Lovers[1]; many bands like Stooges, MC5 and the New York Dolls essentially played punk before there was a term or classification for it, in fact they were later classified as proto-punk[1].

American punk basically began with the Ramones, founded in March 1974 in Forest Hills, New York, where the scene was particularly active[1]. Similar movements developed later in Los Angeles, where punk would soon develop into hardcore[1], in Cleveland, characterized by a more experimental scene[1], and in Boston, where bands essentially played pop power[1].
