Punkrock in the United States of America
American punk has its roots in 1960s garages and the raw minimalism of Velvet Underground and The Modern Lovers; many bands like Stooges, MC5 and the New York Dolls essentially played punk before there was a term or classification for it, in fact they were later classified as proto-punk.
American punk basically began with the Ramones, founded in March 1974 in Forest Hills, New York, where the scene was particularly active. Similar movements developed later in Los Angeles, where punk would soon develop into hardcore, in Cleveland, characterized by a more experimental scene, and in Boston, where bands essentially played pop power.
